Carbon Neutrality therefore applies to every organization, regardless of its business activity or size (i.e., offices, universities, hotels, restaurants, and industrial facilities), since all organizations generate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The most common sources include electricity, fuel, refrigerants, fire extinguishers, lubricants, and waste management.

Why become Carbon Neutral? The main benefits for an organization include:

Image and positioning.
It allows the organization to achieve a favorable position in consumers’ minds and differentiate itself from competitors.

Increased sales.
Today’s consumers are increasingly responsible toward society and the environment and are therefore more willing to choose environmentally friendly products or services.

Cost reduction and control.
The conscious and voluntary implementation of measures to reduce an organization’s carbon footprint helps identify and eliminate inefficiencies in operational processes and encourages the efficient and responsible use of resources, resulting in considerable financial savings.

Easier access to new markets.
Obtaining Carbon Neutrality Certification provides a valuable competitive advantage in a market that increasingly demands or expects evidence of environmental commitment.

Other benefits.
A positive impact on company morale and culture, greater ease in recruiting qualified personnel, and increased credibility among customers, suppliers, and society as a whole.

How can an organization become Carbon Neutral, and who can provide support throughout the process? Being Carbon Neutral does not mean eliminating all sources of emissions, but rather achieving a balance between the emissions generated and those reduced or removed. In brief, Carbon Neutrality is achieved through the following steps:

Quantification.
This is achieved by identifying emission sources and quantifying the emissions they produce during a verifiable period.

Reduction.
This is achieved through the responsible use of resources, optimization and use of alternative energy sources, and proper waste management (i.e., recycling campaigns).

Removal.
This is achieved by establishing specific projects that demonstrate CO2 capture through photosynthetic activity (i.e., the development of forest plantations) or by purchasing Carbon Credits. Additionally, for an organization to formally claim Carbon Neutral status, it must obtain certification issued by independent local or international third parties based on duly established and internationally recognized standards, protocols, or procedures (i.e., ISO 14064). Given the environmental and financial benefits involved, we believe every organization should pursue Carbon Neutral Certification. ZONE can provide support throughout the implementation of a Carbon Neutral Management System until the company obtains its certification.

What does Carbon Neutral mean, and to whom does it apply?
